This drawing was the secret sign of the first Christians. Their lives were often in danger. They had to hide and could only meet in secret. They used the fish symbol to recognise each other.
The Greek word for fish is ichtys. Each letter describes Jesus:
I = Jesus
CH = Christ
T = Theou (= God)
Y = Yios (= son)
S = Sotary (= saviour)
